The three steps
A case is the smallest sealed pack. A carton groups cases for shipping. A pallet is the full freight unit, and it is where the biggest per unit drop happens because handling and freight are spread across more units.
Calculate your real run rate
Take your monthly fill volume, multiply by twelve, and add a scrap allowance of 3 to 5 percent for line rejects and damaged units. Compare that number against the pallet quantity before you place a case order.
When to buy up a step
Buy to the next step when at least one of these is true.
- Your annual run rate crosses the step within two orders
- The SKU is a long term core format, not a trial
- Storage cost per pallet is lower than the per unit saving
- Freight is a meaningful share of your landed cost
When not to
Do not buy up a step for a new SKU that has not proven sell-through, or for a format you may still change after line validation. Buy a case, validate, then commit.
